Dishwasher Repair
Introduction
Installing a new Whirlpool dishwasher can improve your kitchen’s convenience and efficiency. Whether you’re replacing an old unit or installing a dishwasher for the first time, this guide will help you get the job done correctly. These instructions use the Whirlpool WDF520PADM model as a reference but apply to most Whirlpool dishwashers.
Important: Always refer to the installation manual included with your specific model for detailed safety instructions.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips and flat-blade screwdrivers
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Pliers
- Utility knife
- Drill with hole saw bits
- Tubing cutter (if using copper tubing)
- UL-listed wire connectors
- 90-degree elbow fitting (3/8″ compression to 3/4″ hose)
- Hot water supply line (3/8″ O.D. copper tubing or braided line)
- Drain hose (included with dishwasher)
- UL-listed/CSA-approved conduit connector (for hardwired installation)
Step-by-Step Installation
1. Prepare the Installation Area
- Measure the cabinet opening to ensure it’s at least 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 34 inches high.
- Make sure the floor is level and the walls are plumb.
- Drill a 1.5-inch hole in the cabinet wall or floor for the drain hose and water supply.
- Drill a 0.75-inch hole for electrical wiring if you plan to hardwire the dishwasher.
2. Disconnect and Remove Old Dishwasher (If Applicable)
- Turn off electrical power and water supply.
- Disconnect water, electrical, and drain connections from the old unit.
- Remove mounting brackets and carefully pull out the old dishwasher.
3. Prepare the New Dishwasher
- Lay the dishwasher on its back to access the bottom.
- Attach the 90-degree elbow fitting to the water inlet valve.
- If using a power cord, install a UL-listed strain relief on the terminal box.
- Route the drain hose through the rear of the dishwasher.
4. Connect the Water Supply
- Connect the water supply line to the 90-degree elbow fitting.
- Route the line through the cabinet opening toward the hot water valve.
5. Position the Dishwasher
- Stand the dishwasher upright and slide it carefully into the cabinet opening.
- Guide the drain hose and water line through the holes.
- Ensure the dishwasher is centered and flush with cabinet doors.
6. Level the Dishwasher
- Use a level to check front-to-back and side-to-side alignment.
- Adjust the front leveling legs as needed.
7. Secure the Dishwasher
- Open the dishwasher door.
- Attach mounting brackets to the underside of the countertop or cabinet sides using provided screws.
8. Connect the Drain Hose
- Attach the drain hose to the sink drain or garbage disposal inlet.
- Make sure the hose is elevated at least 20 inches from the floor to prevent backflow.
- Secure the connection with hose clamps.
9. Connect the Electrical Supply
For Hardwired Connection:
- Ensure power is turned off at the breaker.
- Route house wiring through the cabinet hole to the dishwasher terminal box.
- Connect black to black (hot), white to white (neutral), and green to green (ground).
- Secure connections with wire connectors.
For Power Cord:
- Plug the power cord into a grounded three-prong outlet in an adjacent cabinet.
10. Test the Dishwasher
- Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
- Restore power at the breaker or plug in the dishwasher.
- Run a short cycle to verify the dishwasher is operating correctly and leak-free.
