Many Samsung fridges have a water filter light that either lights up or turns red to alert you when the water filter is due to be replaced. After replacing your Samsung fridge’s water filter, you then need to reset the water filter light.

Resetting the water filter light will make the warning light go away and reset the timer so your fridge can accurately notify you in several months when your water filter is due to be replaced again.

This article will show you how to reset the water filter light on a Samsung fridge. It will also show you how to replace your Samsung fridge’s water filter. Let’s begin.

You can find a list of specific fridge models this article applies here.

Resetting the water filter light on a Samsung fridge

Resetting the water filter light on a Samsung fridge is a simple process and can be done quickly in just a few quick steps, taking less than a minute. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Step 1: Ensure the old water filter has been replaced with a new one first. Otherwise, you will turn off the warning light and reset the timer while an old filter remains fitted. If you need help, we provide instructions for this in the next section.
  • Step 2: Check whether your fridge has the “Control Lock” feature turned on. It likely does, as it automatically comes on for many Samsung fridge models when they’re not in use for over a minute. When the “Control Lock” feature is on, a lock icon lights up on the fridge’s display panel.
  • Step 3: Turn off the “Control Lock” feature by pressing and holding the “Door Alarm” button for around 3 seconds until the lock icon light disappears.
  • Step 4: Now that the “Control Lock” is turned off, you can reset the filter light. Look for whichever button says “Filter Reset” underneath. It is often the “Ice Maker” button, but can vary per model. Then, press and hold this button for 3 seconds to reset the filter light.

It’s important always to remember to reset the water filter light when replacing your water filter. The light won’t go away on its own; you have to do it manually each time.

If you need instructions on how to change a Samsung fridge water filter correctly, we provide them in the next section:

Replacing the water filter on a Samsung refrigerator

Replacing the water filter on a Samsung fridge is also a simple process. Typically, water filters on Samsung fridges need changing once every six months or every 300 gallons filtered.

Samsung recommends that you use its own filters for the best results. However, other private brands also sell water filters compatible with Samsung fridges, often at a lower cost, but whether the quality is as high is questionable. It’s up to you to decide which filter is right for you.

Before you start, it’s important to check which water filter you need for your specific model, as there are three different types available for Samsung fridges in the USA:

  • HAF-CIN
  • HAF-QIN
  • HAFCU1

You can do this by researching your fridge model online or by locating the existing water filter and checking its model number. Note that there may be different Samsung water filters in other countries.

Here are the steps for replacing HAF-CIN and HAF-QIN Samsung water filter types:

  • Step 1: Turn off the water supply to your fridge using its shut-off valve.
  • Step 2: Locate the old water filter in your fridge. Refer to the user manual if you need help finding where it is. Lift the protective lid if there is one, rotate the filter counterclockwise to unlock it, and then pull it out to remove it.
  • Step 3: Remove the new water filter from its packaging and take off its protective cap. Install the new filter by placing it in the water filter housing where you removed the old one, but this time, rotating it clockwise to lock it in place. The lock symbol on the filter should align with the arrow.
  • Step 4: If any water leaks during the replacement, use a kitchen towel to mop it up.
  • Step 5: After installing the new filter, turn on the water supply and run a few gallons of water through the system before you start drinking it. This will help flush out trapped air and impurities, ensuring the water is clear and no longer cloudy.
  • Step 6: Reset the water filter light using the instructions from this article’s first section.

Here are the steps for replacing HAFCU1 Samsung water filters:

  • Step 1: Turn off the water supply to your fridge.
  • Step 2: Locate your fridge’s old water filter, referring to the user manual if you need help finding it. Twist it to the left to unlock it, then pull it down to remove it.
  • Step 3: Take the new water filter out of its packaging. Install the new filter by inserting it up into the water filter housing and then turning it right to lock it in place. The notch on the filter should align with the arrow on the filter housing.
  • Step 4: If any water leaks out while replacing the filter, use a dry towel to clean it up.
  • Step 5: After installing the new filter, turn the water supply back on and run a few gallons of water through the system before you begin drinking it. This will flush out any impurities and trapped air, ensuring the water is crystal clear and ready to drink.
  • Step 6: Reset the water filter light on your fridge.

In summary, both resetting the water filter light and replacing the water filter on Samsung fridges are simple processes that should take longer than a few minutes. Once you’ve done it once, you’ll never need to refer to a guide or user manual again for help.

And most importantly, by always remembering to do these things when they’re due, you can enjoy fresh, clean water from your Samsung fridge for as long as you have it.
