Does your fridge ever smell a little funny, even after you have wiped down the shelves? If your fridge does not smell refreshing when you open it, following these five simple steps can help improve the odor in your fridge:

1. Organization

Make sure that you keep your fridge organized. Regularly go through items in the door, and throw out any expired sauces or preserves, or are so low you know you will not use them.

Keep diary, meat and eggs in their own area. Make sure everything inside your fridge is in a sealed container or bag. Label leftovers with the date they were created on, and dispose of anything you have not used within a week of cooking.

2. Clean The Inside

Every two to three months, take everything out of your fridge. Wipe down all the shelves. Pull out and wash all the drawers. Wipe the bottom of condiments and containers and make sure they are clean before replacing them in the fridge.

3. Neutralize the Smell

There are many natural ways to absorb bad odors in your fridge.

You can open a box of baking soda and place it in your fridge. A new box of baking soda can absorb fridge odors for up to three months before needing replaced.

Another way you can absorb fridge odor is by filling a clean sock with activated charcoal. You can buy activated charcoal from an aquarium store (do not use the charcoal from your bbq). Charcoal can also absorb bad odors for up to three months.

4. Refresh Your Fridge

You can also natural add a subtle fragrance to your fridge that you smell when you open the door. The key is to make the fragrance light, so it does not overwhelm the food inside or you when you open the fridge.

You can create a natural air freshener inside your fridge by taking your favorite extract or essential oil – such as vanilla, tea tree, lavender or lemon – and sprinkle the extract or oil on a cotton ball. Put the cotton ball on a small dish and place it in the back of your fridge. This will give your fridge a subtle refreshing smell. Replace the cotton ball every few weeks.

5. Brown Paper Bag Your Fruits and Vegetables

Adding a crumpled brown paper bag to your fruit and vegetable drawer will help remove any odors that develop in your crisper. That, and making sure that you use all your fruits and vegetables in a timely manner and do not let them go bad!
