A comparable new top-load washer currently runs in the $600 to $800 range. That puts a full gearcase rebuild on a machine in its fifth or sixth year right at the boundary of the 50% rule. In our experience, if the repair costs less than 50% of a comparable replacement and the machine is under 10 to 12 years old, repair is almost always the smarter financial choice. A $400 repair on a six-year-old machine with four to six years of service life remaining makes sense. A $500 repair on a ten-year-old machine that is showing additional wear requires more thought.
