
Not every broken appliance is actually broken. Some of the most confusing service calls our team handles in Cleveland start with a washer or dishwasher that seems dead, throws strange error codes, or quits mid cycle. Then the diagnosis points somewhere the customer never expected: the wall.
Three recent jobs from our Cleveland service area tell the story.
Case 1: The PF code that wasn’t the washer’s fault.
On July 9, 2026, one of our technicians visited a home near Cleveland’s 44111 zip code for a Whirlpool washer showing a PF (power failure) code after an outage. The customer said the unit would power on but refused to start a cycle. Diagnostics showed no stored error codes, so the tech tested the wall outlet itself and found an open ground. The washer was reacting exactly as designed, protecting its electronics from unsafe power. The fix required two things: a licensed electrician to repair the outlet, and a new control board and panel to replace the components the bad power had already damaged.
Case 2: The dishwasher the electrician missed.
On May 28, 2026, Mac took a call near 44118 for a Whirlpool dishwasher (model WDT750SAKZ4) with no power. The homeowner had already paid an electrician who said the power supply was fine. Mac checked it himself and found the power was actually disconnected, with a burned-up terminal block where the supply wiring meets the dishwasher. He ordered a new terminal block. A burned terminal block is a classic sign of a loose or overheated connection, and it’s a fire risk hiding behind a “dead appliance” complaint.
Case 3: The washer that kept quitting mid cycle.
That same day, Marie V diagnosed a Whirlpool washer (model VWW3809RW0) near 44104 that shut off partway through every cycle. The control board needed replacement, but Marie also found the outlet wasn’t grounded. Installing a new board into an ungrounded outlet just sets up the next failure, so the grounding issue goes to an electrician before the repair is complete.
Why bad power looks like a broken appliance
Modern appliances run on control boards, which are essentially small computers. Whirlpool designs these boards to shut down or throw codes like PF when they detect unstable voltage, missing ground, or power interruptions. The common thread in all three Cleveland jobs: an open ground, an ungrounded outlet, and a burned terminal block each fed bad power to a control board. The appliance takes the blame, but the wiring is the culprit. Sometimes the board survives and only the wiring needs repair. Often, as in two of these cases, the bad power damages the board and both need attention.

That order matters. Installing a new control board on a faulty circuit means paying for the same repair twice.

- Pick up an inexpensive plug-in outlet tester at any hardware store. It will flag open grounds and reversed wiring in seconds
- Note whether problems started after a power outage, a lightning storm, or new electrical work
- If an appliance trips the breaker or throws power-related codes, stop running it until it’s checked
