How to stop my dishwasher from making noise?

A few things can cause your electrolux dishwasher to make unusual noises when it’s running. When trying to find the source of the issue, start by looking at the more simple possibilities first. Here are a few simple steps you can take to fix the problem and enjoy peaceful dishwashing once again.

1. Run your dishwasher empty

The best thing to start off with is running your dishwasher without any dishes inside. If this eliminates the noise, the sound was likely caused by items rattling against each other. You can prevent this from happening in future cycles by ensuring that plates and bowls have space between them when stacked and that cutlery is placed correctly within grooves on the top rack. If a grinding, or other noise persists even after removing dishes or if it becomes excessively loud mid-cycle the best thing to do is to stop the cycle. At this stage you know that the source of the noise is the dishwasher itself and will require you to do some more investigation.

2. Check for damage from the wash arms

If you’ve run your Electrolux dishwasher on empty and found that the noise is persisting, then the next thing to do is to look at the wash arms. Wash arms that are damaged due to mineral deposit buildup or debris accumulation clogging spray holes are common sources of loud noise. A clogged wash arm will result in scraping sounds when the dishwasher is running.

To check for damage or blockages, first remove the wash arms from the dishwasher and inspect them for cracks, dents, or other signs of wear and tear. If you notice damage to any wash arm, it’s important to replace it. Next, check for blockages by running water through the wash arm and inspecting for any clogs or debris. If you notice any blockages, use a toothpick or other small object to remove the debris so water can go through the arms smoothly.

3. Check the circulation pump and replace worn bearings

If your Electrolux dishwasher continues to make a loud noise, then the problem may be with the circulation pump. The bearings on a circulation pump are prone to wear and tear. Over time, they can be damaged resulting in a loud noise.

To check the circulation pump, start by turning off the power to your dishwasher and disconnecting the water supply. Next, remove the bottom panel of your dishwasher and locate the circulation pump. Check the circulation pump for any visible damage by disconnecting the wires and hoses from the pump and removing it from the dishwasher. If the bearings look worn, use a screwdriver to remove the impeller and then remove the old bearings. Then install the new bearings and reassemble the impeller. Once you’ve reinstalled the circulation pump,  reattach the wires and hoses. Your dishwasher should be ready to run again. Although replacing the bearings on your Electrolux dishwasher circulation pump can be a bit of a challenge, it’s well worth the effort if that eliminates the annoying noise.

4. Check your dishwasher is draining properly

If you’ve noticed that your dishwasher is making a strange noise during its draining cycle, it may mean that it has an obstruction causing noises when the water is trying to drain. If your plumbing is blocked, you may notice hollow gurgling sounds coming from behind your Electrolux dishwasher.

Dishwashers are usually connected to the same drainage system as your kitchen sink, so any obstructions in your kitchen’s plumbing system also impairs your dishwasher’s drainage and can lead to odd noises. The easiest way to solve this issue is to run your garbage disposal unit if you have one attached to your sink, and rinse the sink with hot water. If this doesn’t solve the issue, try using a drain cleaner and letting it sit for a few minutes, or using a plunger to force any obstructions out of the drain.

When to call a professional

If you’ve followed these steps but your dishwasher is continuing to make odd noises, it may be time to call a professional. A professional can help find the source of your dishwasher’s noise and can fix it for you. If you suspect the problem is with your drainage system, which may occur if your dishwasher is making strange noises during the drain cycle, or if your sink becomes clogged, it’s best to call a local plumber for help. If your dishwasher makes odd noises at other times, it’s best to call a trained appliance repair person to help you solve the issue. These professionals will likely be able to fix these issues and give you advice on how to avoid recurrences.
