How to Replace Your Frigidaire Refrigerator’s Run Capacitor

If your Frigidaire refrigerator is no longer cooling, a lot of different parts could be the underlying culprit. However, once you’ve made certain that the refrigerator is still receiving power, which you can do either with a multimeter or by testing the lights and fan, the run capacitor and compressor is one of the first areas you should check for malfunction. If this part is broken, the compressor also won’t work. Order the replacement part #297286802 for a wide selection of Electrolux, Westinghouse, and Frigidaire models, and follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator. This repair involves directly manipulating electrical components, so it’s especially important to remove the power source.
  2. Remove the rear access cover. Loosen the six screws around the edge and completely remove the panel.
  3. Access the capacitor. Release the clip connecting the capacitor to the compressor so the wire isn’t in the way. Take care not to bend or shift the copper tubing.
  4. Remove the capacitor. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the run capacitor free from the start mechanism. Then pull it out of the fridge. Again, make sure you don’t jostle the copper lines bent around the compressor.
  5. Replace the run capacitor. Plug the capacitor into place so the terminals fit snugly.
  6. Replace the covers. First, return the wire into position around the capacitor and clip it to the edge of the compressor. Then reattach the access cover and plug the refrigerator back in.
