Appliance Repair: Proper Maintenance Can Keep Your Refrigerator Running Without A Hitch

Your refrigerator is on the job 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Its hard work keeps your food fresh and provides you with cold, invigorating drinks on hot summer days. Unfortunately, your appliance’s ability to get the job done, often leads to a lack of maintenance, which can end up causing it to waste energy or breakdown prematurely. The tips and tricks supplied below can help keep your refrigerator running and save you money on your energy bills.

1. Your refrigerator’s temperature should always stay between 30 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. While your freezer is best set to zero or below. Both temperatures are ideal for safely preserving your food without needlessly wasting energy.

2. An important tip that should be implemented at least twice a year is cleaning your appliance’s coils. Dirty coils make your refrigerator work much harder, which means a waste of energy. Although, you may view this as a tedious task, it truly can cut back on your appliance’s energy use, while also prolonging its life. Keep in mind, if you have a dog or cat, you may want to up the number of cleanings you perform.

3. Keeping your freezer and refrigerator filled allows them to run at their highest efficiency level. However, be careful not to block the vents in your appliance; otherwise you could hinder its performance.

4. Occasionally testing your fridge’s door gasket will stop your appliance from loosing cold air due to an ineffective seal. An easy way to accomplish this task is by enlisting a handy dollar bill. Simply close your refrigerator’s door on the dollar, and then give the money a nice yank. If you can pull it out, your gasket is either dirty or needs to be replaced. Be sure to perform the test around the whole door, including the freezer.

5. November 15th is national clean out your refrigerator day. While giving your appliance a good scrub down is probably not your favorite thing to do, it is an essential step to avoiding the need for appliance repair. Take advantage of this national cleaning day by throwing away all spoiled food and wiping down the shelves in your fridge.
