Nobody likes taking food out of their freezer only to discover it’s riddled with freezer burn. Fortunately, you can rest assured that the appearance of freezer burn doesn’t mean you need to call your local appliance repair company. This phenomenon occurs when the food stored in your freezer is exposed to air and becomes dehydrated. While the presence of freezer burn doesn’t make your food unsafe, it is known to affect its taste and texture. If you’re tired of finding your food covered in unsightly ice crystals, follow the advice provided below before storing another item in your appliance.
- Often times, the packaging you bring your groceries home in is insufficient for freezer storage which can lead to a bad case of freezer burn. Before putting anything in your appliance, wrap it in tinfoil or plastic wrap and store it in an airtight container or a bag that is specifically designed for freezer use.
- Do not allow trapped air to stay in your food’s storage container. You can prevent this from happening by only freezing full containers, though you should leave at least a ½ inch of room for expansion.
- If your food is still hot do not attempt to freeze it. Allowing food to cool down before placing it in the freezer ensures steam will not get captured within the packaging. Otherwise, the presence of steam will end up causing ice crystals to form on your food.
- Food left in the freezer for a long period of time has a larger chance of becoming inflicted with freezer burn. Labeling items with the date as you place them in your appliance can help you avoid this issue. As you pull containers out of your freezer try to first use the packages that have been stored the longest.
- Make sure the temperature of your freezer is always set to below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If it isn’t, and the appliance’s temperature is constantly fluctuating, freezer burn is more likely to occur.
Freezer burn is a problem easily prevented with proper food storage. Unfortunately, not all freezer issues can be solved in such a simple manner. If you’ve noticed a decrease in your appliance’s performance, but you can’t seem to locate the malfunction, please contact us and we’ll be happy to inspect and fix your freezer.
