Appliance Repair Tips: Things to Never Put in Your Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal then you may think that it’s a catch-all for any type of garbage you want to get rid of. However, that’s far from the truth. There are many items that you do not want to put down your garbage disposal in order to keep it working so you don’t have to call for Appliance Repair.

Here are a few appliance repair tips on things to never put in your garbage disposal.

  • Oil and Grease. Oil, grease, and fats are bad for any system because they can clog up the disposal. Once these things cool, they tend to solidify, which adds gunk to your disposal and can make it not work well or at all.
  • Starches or Vegetables with Fibers. Things like potato skins, asparagus, and celery can wrap around your garbage disposal blades and cause it to no longer work. These vegetables also clog the drain and give you problems as well so always dispose of these types of vegetables in another way – not down your disposal.
  • Expanding Grains. Rice and pasta are grains that expand in water so over time these items can and will expand in your drain as well, making it clog up.
  • Egg Shells. The shell itself is pretty harmless but the membrane that is within the shell can wrap around the blades of your disposal.
  • Bones and Pit Seeds. Both bones and pit seeds get caught in the drain because the disposal blades are not strong enough to pulverize these items. Unless it’s fish bones, keep the bones and pits out of your disposal.

These are just a few of the things to keep out of your disposal. While you may be able to throw out that last bite of stuffing from a Thanksgiving Dinner, you’ll want to keep these things far away from it. However, if you do need service on your garbage disposal then contact us and we’ll be glad to help.
