Mold likes to grow in damp, moist and dark places. Mold does not usually like to live inside of your fridge though because it is too dry. However, if you leave old food inside of your fridge, mold can grow start to grow on the food. It can then spread to the fridge itself, and take root in any spills that you might not have wiped up. You need to clean it up before you need to clean up a refrigerator appliance repair.

If you find mold in your fridge, you need to clean it up right away. You do not want to give the mold any extra time to grow.

First, you need to put on protective gloves. If you are sensitive to mold spores, you should also wear a mask as well as goggles.

Once you have on your protective gear, you need to remove all the food in your fridge. Throw away anything that has mold on it, it is not worth keeping. Make sure you wipe down all food containers in order to decontaminate the containers. You may want to place the food in another fridge or in a cooler with ice to keep it cold. Then, turn down your fridge so that the motor is not working overtime while you are clean out the fridge.

Take a paper towel and wipe down any mold that you can see in your fridge. Place the paper towel inside of a zip lock bag, seal and discard. You do not want to let the mold pores out in your house.

Make a solution in a spray bottle that is one part bleach to one part water.

Remove the shelves and the drawer from the fridge. Place them in your tub and saturate them with the bleach solution. Allow them to sit.

Go to the fridge and take the spray bottle. Thoroughly spray any area that has mold on it until it is dripping wet. Be sure to spray down the rest of the fridge too. Close the fridge and let the solution sit for thirty minutes.

Go back to the shelves and drawers you left soaking in the tub. Clean them with either a paper towel or sponge. You will want to dispose of the sponge when you are done cleaning. After you have wiped down the drawers and shelves, rinse them with hot water, then dry them off.

Now, finish cleaning the fridge. Wipe up the water from the solution with paper towels or rags. Keep wiping it down until all of the cleaning solution is gone from your fridge. Be sure to dispose of all rags and paper towels that were used to clean the fridge with.

Put the shelves and drawers back into the fridge. Put all of the food back into the fridge. Be sure to turn the fridge back to the regular setting and dispose of all cleaning supplies.
