Does your washing machine produce an obnoxiously loud noise? Some noise is to be expected when using a washing machine, but a normal unit shouldn’t sound like a NASA rocket blasting into space.
Adjust The Feet
One of the most common causes of a loud washing machine is unlevel feet. If the feet aren’t level, the unit may bounce around during the spin cycles, creating loud “bumping” noises each time it hits the ground.
Place a spirit level on top of your washing machine to determine whether or not it’s level. To fix an unlevel unit, you must release the locking nuts and unscrew (or screw) the feet. Turn the feet either clockwise or counterclockwise to lower/raise them. Continue adjusting the feet until the spirit level is even, at which point you can reattach the locking nuts and enjoy your quiet washing machine.
Wait To Wash Complete Loads of Laundry
Washing single garments or partial loads may also result in unusually loud noises coming from your unit. This is due to the fact that garments, particularly those made of absorbent fabrics like cotton and wool, absorb water. The weight of the added water results in stray garments being violently tossed around the inside of the washing machine like a bowling ball, knocking the sides from all directions.
Wait until you have a complete load of laundry before starting your washing machine. The garments will still absorb water, but there’s less space inside the unit for them to bounce around.
Invest In Anti-Vibration Pads
Placing anti-vibration pads on the bottom of your washing will dampen some of its noise. These pads work by absorbing the vibrations created by the unit, which in turn reduces the noise created. The pads are easy to install and can be used on any make and model washing machine (or clothes dryer).
Check Your Pockets
Try to get into the habit of checking your pants’ pockets before tossing your garments into the washing machine. If hard items are left inside your pockets, they could escape and bounce around the unit’s interior during the spin cycle.
