Problems can arise if you’re not sure whether you can fix an appliance yourself.

When something goes wrong with an appliance, many people immediately pick up the phone and call for professional appliance service. While this method is foolproof, some people may choose to do their own repairs. As long as the right parts are available, it’s entirely possible for a DIY repair to work well. Some service companies even stock parts for people who know how to take care of repairs on their own.  At Fred’s Appliance, all part sales are shipped directly to the consumer’s door.

Problems can arise when someone isn’t sure whether or not an appliance can be fixed on a DIY basis. On one hand, it can be annoying to call for repairs only to find that the fix was something very simple. However, it’s worse to get into a repair project and then realize that the job is beyond one’s own skills. Therefore, the first thing anyone should do when considering their own repairs is determine whether the job is within their abilities.

Surprisingly, one of the easiest ways to learn about what a repair will require is to call an appliance repair company and ask them. Companies that sell parts are often happy to describe the work involved in a particular project. Since they sell parts as well as service, they will get business either way. This reduces the desire to shift all of the business over to the service department.

The next thing to consider is your own skill level and aptitude for figuring out how machines work. Needless to say, a DIY project is more likely to go well if you’ve done these sorts of things before.

Time is the last factor you should consider. If you haven’t done repairs of this sort before, it’s going to take a while to figure out how to do them. This is true even if you have “the knack” for these things. When a broken oven is standing between you and the perfect Thanksgiving dinner, for example, it’s usually not a good idea to start trying to figure out the mysteries of engineering.

With these things in mind, you should find it easier to decide whether you should attempt to fix your own appliance or have an appliance service company come out. Whatever you decide, the next step is to contact us. We offer both parts and service, so we can help you get everything working right no matter which path you choose!
