Refrigerator Appliance Repair: How To Fix A Refrigerator Door Gasket

Leaky refrigerator door gaskets are a common problem that will raise your energy bills and make your food spoil faster. A professional repair service can replace your gaskets or you may want to try this refrigerator appliance repair yourself if you feel handy.

The gasket is the rubber seal on the refrigerator door. Over time it becomes more brittle and can start letting cold air out and warm air in. There are a few ways to inspect for leaks. You may notice visible fraying or condensation. Another method is to put a small flood lamp inside a closed refrigerator, turn off the kitchen lights and see if light leaks out through the edges of the door. You can also try closing the door on a piece of paper. If it pulls right out without any drag, the gasket needs replacing.

For most refrigerators, all you need to get started is a replacement seal, a screwdriver and a wrench. You should be able to find the correct seal for your model on the manufacturer’s website or through an appliance service. The job usually takes about a half hour. To make it easier, soak the new seal in hot water until it feels pliable and any crimps disappear.

To remove the old seal, work your way down in sections from the top loosening the screws until you can pull the gasket from under the metal retainer. Attach the new gasket by pushing it under the retainer and retightening the screws. When you’re done, check the door for proper alignment. If there is any warping causing gaps between the gasket and the frame, loosen the screws and grip the door from the top and bottom to straighten it. Tighten the screws again when you get a good fit with the new seal.

This will work for many models, but you may need professional help if your refrigerator is configured differently. We specialize in reliable, knowledgeable appliance repair and repair parts so contact us to get your household back on its feet.
